You guys can talk about juicy fruits and healthy salads all you like, but let’s be real: ice cream = summer, right?! Now, I could tell you about my favourite flavour (which is stracciatella or bacio, but only from one special parlour) or drink (which is affogato, yet with chocolate or hazelnut instead of vanilla), but I’d rather share with you some pictures from a book released two years ago, when two friends travelled 125 ice cream parlours during nine days (!) in all 16 states of Germany. They spent € 375,35 to eat each time the same sundae named: Pinocchio Eisbecher. Yes, after Pinocchio. I assume it’s a German thing?

Notes: This happened as a comment fic over at the little_details comm below this entry where liriaen eventually dug up a legend from Passau, an ancient town in Lower Bavaria, famous for being the place where two rivers join the mighty Danube, and very close to the Austrian border. You can run the story through DeepL or something, but it's basically about the fact that one (probably pimply) scholar named Christian Elsenreiter used to sell small scraps of paper to the inclined, who would eat them and thus deliver their soul to the devil. In return they were supposed to be invincible - but when they died their soul and body would go to hell. Fun times!

( There, a pair of heels approaches, their measured steps echoing coldly in an alley that is otherwise empty and silent. A shadow peels itself out of the dampness, as if put together of some slower shadows left by dawn. It’s a man, expensively clad; yet later, Elsenreiter wouldn’t be able to tell you what exactly he was wearing. )

2024, a year in writing

Nowadays I’m doing a semi-great job of distracting myself from Things. Everytime I’m trying to assemble something not unlike a post to share with you guys I feel so fucking exhausted and tired. I want to reply engaged and wittily, but at the end of my day all I can do is crawl back to some fanfic evergreens to soothe my soul.

Since it’s still January I think I can get away with my A Year In Writing list. It’s not really much, but I had fun. My writing mojo is still hovering somewhere around 2023, in case you see them please send them back to me asap, thank you!

Notes: Written for 2024's Yuletide! You can read it also over at the Archive. I had a real blast writing about one of my favourite painters ever, plus one of his weirdest paintings ever. (Although it's not my favourite Sphinx of him, which would be this one.)

Some more notes

There is a lot of speculation going on about the nature of Moreau's relationships with several people around him, and while I want to stress: I do not claim to know better than anyone else I'd like to introduce the possibility of Moreau being asexual but not aromantic to the inclined mind. He did forge very intense friendships (and maybe even more) with several people around him, and he later had a very close lady friend. They did not live together (he lived alone with his mother, ahem), but entertained some kind of relationship his mother approved of. Enter Oedipus, haha! No, but really. I tried to weave these layers together, so tell me if you think that does not make sense at all. Hopefully this thing isn't too hermetic. *sweats*

( How could the inhabitants have forgotten about that, and why were they telling lies to these strangers? They had used to bring her gifts, coral jewellery and deep-sea diadems, keeping her entertained and well-disposed. Along with news and morsels of gossip to pass the time in grateful exchange for a clever riddle or two. )
